September 4th, 2024

San Diego, CA – Simone Little Italy, a Kor-designed high-rise located at 1401 Union St. in San Diego’s Little Italy neighborhood, has been honored with the 2024 ACI San Diego Chapter Award for Best Residential Structure. This recognition highlights the building’s innovative architecture, sustainable design, and luxurious amenities that redefine urban living.

The 36-story Simone Little Italy features 395 apartments, offering a mix of studios, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom units ranging from 577 to 1,097 square feet, as well as penthouses of about 1,500 square feet. The development also includes 32 units specifically set aside for low-income renters, emphasizing a commitment to diversity and community inclusion.

Kor Structural is proud to be the Structural Engineer of Record for the project and congratulates all project team members for working together to bring this exciting addition to the San Diego skyline. Some of the unique structural challenges of the project included designing the raft foundation to bridge over the city’s main sewer interceptor pipe, and completing an advanced performance-based seismic design. Through an alternate means and methods approval process, Kor engineers worked to develop a seismic force resisting system that did away with perimeter moment frames typically required under current codes, which provided the architectural freedom to design the distinctive façade of this award winning building.
